Introduction
Did you know that 73 percent of employers are looking for candidates with strong writing skills? In fact, communication is the top in-demand skill for employers globally in 2024.
For instructional designers and others who create instructional content, writing is a critical skill—one that appears at or near the top of most hiring managers’ wish lists. To help meet this essential need, I hosted a free writing webinar last week called “Writing Secrets to Make Learning Stick.” In case you missed it, I’m sharing the recording of that webinar in this week’s post (with a few edits for time).
Because I’m cheesy and love punny acronyms, I shared secrets for writing that’s so good, it should be a “CRIME. That is, I shared tips for how to make your writing:
- Clear,
- Relevant,
- Informative,
- Motivational, and
- Engaging.
I discussed how to overcome the forgetting curve and how to tap into the brain’s reward system so learners remember what you teach and want to learn more.

Want to Learn More?
Honing your writing skills is an excellent way to level up your career. Unfortunately, what you can learn through a one-hour writing webinar can take you only so far. To truly improve your writing skills requires lots and lots of practice. To that end, I’m offering a comprehensive instructional writing course called “Smart Writing for Sticky Learning” that will give you expert guidance along with opportunities to practice what you learn and get feedback on your writing.
The six-week course will help you master the craft of inclusive, evidence-based instructional writing. The course includes:
- 9 hours of live, virtual instruction (plus this recording)
- Hands-on practice with expert guidance and personalized feedback
- Weekly email microlessons and bite-sized practice activities
- A writer’s toolbox with resources, tools, references, and checklists
- Access to session recordings
- A learning community
I hope you’ll join me for the first cohort, which begins June 26. Sign up by June 8 for early bird pricing.
