Trick or Treat: AI Music Generators

A cartoon zombie crawls out of a computer screen from a graveyard.
I played with some AI music generators to create Halloween songs, and I wrote a parody about the horrors of inaccessible eLearning. Enjoy!

Introduction

As a special treat for Halloween, I’m sharing some spooky songs I created using AI music generator tools, plus a parody of “Thriller” that I wrote myself, with just a little help from AI.

Grab some candy corn or a Reese’s Pumpkin and get ready to hear about the horrors of inaccessible eLearning!

Why Use AI Music Generators?

Before we get into the songs, if you’re wondering about the use case for AI music generators, here are a few examples:

  • Background (or intro/outro) music for an instructional video.
  • Waiting room music for Zoom or another virtual learning platform.
  • Music to play at break time during instructor-led courses.
  • Music to signal participants (for example, that it’s time to switch groups during a gallery walk activity).
  • Songs to help participants learn a concept.

You can find royalty-free music at sites like Pixabay and Bensound, but if you’re not finding what you need, then you might want to try out AI music generators. Let’s look at a few I tried out.

Suno.com

I asked the Suno music generator for “a spooky song similar to ‘Thriller’ about the horrors of inaccessible, non-inclusive training and e-learning.” (However, I later learned that mentioning song titles or artists isn’t usually very effective.)

Suno created a fun song called “Midnight Learnin’.” You can listen to it here.

While it isn’t similar to “Thriller,” and some of the lyrics are a bit nonsensical, overall, I like it.

The free version of Suno only allowed me to generate one song per day, but it did create an extended version of the same song.

My favorite line from this one is “accessibility’s a ghost.” It does seem to be elusive sometimes, doesn’t it?

AImusic.so

The next tool I tried was AI Music. I got a little more specific with my prompt this time, asking it to “create a parody of Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller,’ about an inaccessible e-Learning course. Example: Cause it’s a killer, killer course. And no one’s gonna save you from design so very poor.”

AI Music generated two samples using the same lyrics but different tunes. Again, I didn’t get a Michael Jackson parody—presumably because we could get into copyright trouble. But the first output has a very similar vibe. Take a listen for yourself.

The English teacher, poetry-loving part of me adores these two lines:

  • “Accessibility’s a broken wing.”
  • “Clicking links they lead to broken dreams.”

Custom Mode

AI Music offers a custom mode where you can insert your own lyrics, so I gave that a try as well, using the cadence from “Thriller.” But of course, the AI tool created different melodies. Listen here.

Other Tools

When I started playing with AI music generator tools, my goal (besides learning more about the tools) was to create a parody of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.” To that end, I tried out a few more tools. I didn’t keep any samples from them, but I’m mentioning them in case you want to check them out:

  • Lalal.ai lets you extract vocal, accompaniment, and/or instruments from any audio and video. (However, this doesn’t mean you can legally use it, as far as copyright is concerned.)
  • Musicfy.lol lets you “sing like any artist.” You’re supposed to be able to upload your vocals and the tool will transform them to sound like someone else. Let’s just say transforming my off-pitch singing into anything resembling Michael Jackson was too tall of an order for this tool. I plan to play with it some more though.
  • Writecream.AI has an AI song parody generator. It’s not bad, and I used a few of it’s phrases to tweak my own lyrics (below).

I also asked ChatGPT for help too, but although it can create melodies, chords, and short compositions, it seems to be limited to instrumental music. (Someone correct me if I’m wrong.) It was very supportive of my efforts though, telling me my parody ideas was “fantastic!” So that was validating, anyway.

Thriller Parody

I finally settled on writing my own lyrics, with a few small tweaks courtesy of Writecream.

Since I don’t have music for it, you’ll just have to sing it in your head. Or break out in song at your desk, no judgment.

I didn’t do the entire song (it’s very long), so the Vincent Price speaking part isn’t included. Feel free to come up with your own lyrics for that and try them out in the office as well, complete with the evil villain laughter at the end.

"Killer" Lyrics

(Verse 1)

It’s close to lunch time

And something’s lurking in our LMS

A course assignment

Gives me a fright, oh what a mess

I’m not alone

Because a quarter of us are disabled

A ghostly groan

I realize I’m in for a rough ride.

I’m terrorized

(Chorus)

This course is a killer, killer beast

When no one’s thought ahead about accessibility

C’mon hear our chilling, chilling plea

Don’t make us fight for equal learning opportunities yeah

(Verse 2)

You try to click next

And realize the focus order’s wrong

Can’t read the small text

And contrast is so poor it’s demon spawn

You want to scream

As you try to tab through the interactions

It’s all a bad dream

And unfortunately this whole thing is timed

Should be a crime

(Chorus)

This course is a killer, killer beast

When no one’s thought ahead about accessibility

C’mon hear this chilling, chilling plea

Don’t make us fight for equal learning opportunities yeah

(Bridge)

So now we call

On every designer to finally take heed

There’s no escaping the need for inclusion for all (this is our call)

So let’s make it right, ooh

(Chorus)

Don’t make more killer, killer beasts

Yeah let’s all think ahead about accessibility

C’mon hear our chilling, chilling plea

And help us fight for equal learning opportunities yeah

Summary

I hope you had as much fun with this post as I did. Share it with others so they can get these songs stuck in their heads too.

Leave me a comment and let me know what AI music generators you’re using.

Happy Halloween!
