The Challenge
Due to shortages of mental health professionals and long waits at behavioral health treatment centers, emergency department personnel are increasingly being asked to care for pediatric patients with suicidality and self-harm. However, most of these personnel have not received pediatric-specific training and therefore may not be well-equipped to care for these patients. PPN and EIIC began development of a course to educate emergency department personnel, but progress had been stalled due to multiple reviews by the curriculum committee.
The Solution
Scissortail worked with PPN and EIIC to redesign their set of 65 PowerPoint slides to transform it from an infodump to an interactive, engaging learning experience. We began each module with the story of a child who comes to the emergency department with suicidality or self-harm, teaching the concepts in context of caring for that child and wrapping up the module with the positive conclusion of the story. This technique contextualizes the information and builds empathy in learning, helping them connect the content with its importance and relevance to the lives of the children they treat. To mitigate delays, we worked with one lead SME who facilitated reviews and adjudicated changes using Google Docs and Articulate Review for a collaborative review process.
